Home makeovers and redecorating can be both daunting and expensive. Whether it’s new paint, new furniture, new floors, or just some updated decor, a home makeover project can become expensive or time consuming or both. If you’re like many struggling consumers today, you might need all of your extra money for debt management or other bills. If you are short on cash but have extra time, then some do it yourself projects may be the perfect way to update your home and save some money.
Refinish Wood Furniture
You can change the look of your wooden tables, chairs, or shelves. This project will take a little work, but you can customize your furniture and get great results. Start by stripping or sanding off any finish on the wood. Then you can re-stain the piece how you like it, or paint it for a pop of color.
Make Your Own Custom Artwork
Another great way to add color is custom art on the walls. It can be as simple as a stencil, a word, or an abstract design that you put paint on a canvas, which you can purchase at a craft store. You could also pick up an inexpensive frame and hang just about anything you like. A photo, a poster, a piece of fabric, or even something you cut out of a book or magazine. Art is whatever you want it to be.
Fresh Coat of Paint
Fresh paint can liven up any room. It does take time and some furniture moving, but it’s a very cost-effective way to change the look and feel of your home. See our previous post about free paint and cleaning supplies.
Re-purposing
Got some old windows, cabinet doors, scrap wood, or other junk? First of all, you could throw it out and get rid of some clutter. Otherwise, find something useful to do with it. Paint something on that wood, or make it a photo board. Old rustic windows can also make cool picture frames on the wall.
Slip Covers and Pillows for Old Couches
Couch looking a little drab? Before you think about tossing it out for a new one, see if you can find a slipcover. You can choose a different color or pattern, and make the couch look new again. If you want to keep it simple, go with a neutral color and add colorful pillows.
Whatever DIY project you choose to undertake, look for deals on materials. Check out yard sales and discount stores. If you are struggling financially, then be sure you are prioritizing your debt reduction and paying bills before you put any money into redecorating.
