If you’re like me, you look forward to Halloween all year long. Throughout the year, I’ll be thinking about my next Halloween costume and trying to remember the best ideas until the time actually comes. I’ll even go as far as writing them down and saving the paper so I don’t forget… which will happen when you have an idea that can’t be used for 7 months. I also like to make my own costumes. It’s a good way to stay on budget and avoid credit card debt. Here are some of the best DIY Halloween costumes that I’ve seen this year.
All of these ideas are very cool and involve only basic materials, craft skills, and/or makeup. A lot of this stuff you can buy on the cheap, or you might even have lying around the house.

Bonus tips:
- Look in your closets and storage spaces for old clothes and accessories. Something may trigger an idea. I’ve made costumes out of old clothes several times, and I have zero sewing or craft skills. You just improvise and learn as you go.
- Shop without buying. Go to the costume store and just look around. Maybe you’ll see one accessory to build off of, then do the rest at home.
- Have an idea? Do an online search to find tips on how to make it come to life… even if you’re supposed to be dead.
