Are you eligible for student debt forgiveness?
When you’re overwhelmed by college debt and not sure how to repay student loans, student debt forgiveness programs may be an option.
There are a number of student debt forgiveness programs available to borrowers entering or working in certain fields. Some forgiveness programs are designed to encourage graduating students to enter teaching careers in high-need fields, which vary by state and location. Other student debt forgiveness programs may be available for borrowers who are entering community service, military service, and health services careers.
For help determining whether you are eligible for a student loan debt forgiveness program, consult American Consumer Credit Counseling (ACCC). How student debt forgiveness works.
Student debt forgiveness programs are generally restricted to graduates entering a public service field that may not be as lucrative as the private sector. These programs are an incentive for bright young minds in the USA to give back to their communities.
Eligibility for student debt forgiveness is usually determined by the lender. Qualifications for some student debt forgiveness programs can be rather complicated. For some federal loans, for instance, borrowers must be employed full-time in certain public service jobs and have made 10 years of on-time payments on their federal loans. Some loans like FFEL and Perkins loans do not qualify for this program, but they may be consolidated into a Direct Loan, which may qualify. Your ACCC credit counselor can provide more details and direct you to the appropriate resources.
