We’ve always meant to do a post on what to do with “free money,” but after searching the archives of Talking Cents Blog, I’ve realized that we’ve never touched on the topic. Back when I did the Cash-Only Christmas Challenge, I talked about using sites like Ebates.com or the new-to-me TopCashBack.com to earn cash back when online shopping. I’ve noticed recently that some of my credit card companies are offering cash back on purchases made either online or in-person at certain retailers. Perhaps you receive cash-back opportunities such as these, or have received gift cards from family members for your birthday or holidays, at work for a job well done, via online raffles, etc. and you are wondering what to do with that “free money.”
We offer you a few suggestions:
- Receive cash back? Transfer that money to an online savings account, earmark for a rainy day fund, or perhaps contribute to your debt management efforts.
- Treat yourself to something of equal or lesser value than the amount of the “free money” – but do not spend over the amount of the “free money”. That defeats the purpose!
- Save that “free money” to purchase gifts or necessities during a time you know you might be financially strapped, such as back to school, the holidays, or a month where your pay may be less. Every little bit helps!
At Talking Cents blog, we want to provide you with the opportunity to treat yourself with a $25 gift card to Amazon.com. It’s your choice on how to spend it – remember, equal or lesser value equates it to “free money”. Or you can save it for when it might come in real handy! Enter to win by using the Rafflecopter widget below. We will be running this raffle from June 2 – June 30, announcing a winner just in time for the 4th of July!
