Tuesday Tip: Heat Your Home with Sunlight

Most of the country is in a deep freeze at the moment. Here in New England, we’re looking at temperatures in the teens, and we were hit by a Nor’easter last week. If your town is above freezing right now, you’re in the minority. Heck, the Midwest has temperatures below zero today! Winter has only just begun, but I’m ready to call it quits and hide under a blanket until Spring. All this cold weather can really make a dent in your budget with the spike in your heating bill. Not to mention having to pay more for heating makes it harder for debt management. But as long as the sun is shining, there is a way to save energy and stay warm.

So how do you save money and reduce your heating bill?

American Consumer Credit Counseling recommends that you heat your home with sunlight.

Open up your curtains!

That’s right. Heat your home with sunlight. Don’t turn your home into an ice cave this winter. If you let that sunlight in, you can save energy and money on your heating bill. That will help you stay on track with your household budget. Open curtains and shades on South facing walls to let the solar rays heat those rooms. Additionally, if you have heavier curtains, closing them when it’s dark will help keep the heat in. We hope that if you heat your home with sunlight, you won’t have to turn up your thermostat.

If you’re struggling to pay off debt, ACCC can help. Schedule a free credit counseling session with us today.
