Debt management is hard work. When you’re planning your expenses down to the penny, it can feel impossible to find the room for charitable giving. But even when finances are tight, many still feel a desire to give back wherever possible. And while it can be difficult to part with money that could really help your bottom line, it’s important to uphold your values, too. Here are some ways you can balance charitable giving with your budget.
Charitable Giving and My Budget
How can you stay afloat financially while also helping those in need? The key is striking a balance between charitable giving and your other financial needs and goals. As the saying goes, every little bit counts. No contribution is too small. Even if all you’re able to give is $2 – you can feel good about that.
While I’m sure you aren’t donating to get something in return, there are some financial benefits of giving. Most notably, when someone donates to an eligible charity, the donation is considered tax deductible.
Nothing makes charitable giving more rewarding than when you know you’re doing good. The feeling of fulfillment doesn’t have to be linked to a monetary value. There are a number of ways to give to charity without breaking your budget.
Charitable Giving on the Cheap
- Save up your change. If you’re getting out of debt, you may have adopted a cash-only budget. One strategy to save for charitable giving is to let your spare change accumulate for a few weeks. A few cents here and there can really add up, and it’s money that may otherwise have gone unused.
- Knit scarves/gloves for those in need.
- Make Dollar Store “survival” bags that include snacks, gloves, water, tissues, etc. and distribute as needed.
- Give your time. By going to a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, or taking part in Big Brother/Big Sister programs, you can make a real difference without spending a dime.
- Donate clothes.
Giving is beneficial all around. It makes you feel good, and it helps others. And when the going gets tough, helping others (even when you’re struggling yourself) can re-invigorate your path towards debt relief. It’s important to take care of ourselves and others as much as our finances allows. Supporting one another, whether financially or otherwise, makes all the difference!
